Years of navy service had taught Jack a thing or two about dealing with boys: he knew to start with food rather than questions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Lily smacked his shoulder. \u201cThere is no need to be unkind,\u201d she said. \u201cIf you were female, you would be quite the spinster by now, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLuckily I had the fortune to be born a man.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As if I would come to blows with a lady, however long the ride might be.\u201d Jack looked affronted.<\/p>\n

Miss Oswald rolled her eyes, and the childish expression made her look far younger than she generally did. \u201cIt was a figure of speech, sir. And in any case, you shouldn\u2019t be so quick to say so. My father taught me to box.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

“I cannot imagine what gentlemen see to recommend this feeling!\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did say you had fun last night, ma\u2019am. I think that\u2019s most of the draw.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot worth it,\u201d Lily said firmly. \u201cThough the charades were the most amusing thing I have ever heard.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDid they happen after the whiskey had been brought out?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLong after. So perhaps I do see the appeal after all.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
