Even Edith Pickering and Cora Delacourt, who had lived with Mrs. Hoggett, didn\u2019t seem terribly moved, but then again they had a good deal of practice in losing people, having lived through the last time the world decided to kill off a generation.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

James\u2019s own parents had died when he was a child, and he had often wondered if that was why death took him badly. He ought to have developed a callus over whatever part of his heart was meant for mourning, but instead, it was like a wound that never quite healed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t,\u201d James said, when he pulled back to sit on his heels. \u201cSet off my tripwires, that is. Murder does, but that isn\u2019t you.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cSometimes it is,\u201d Leo said. \u201cSometimes I\u2019m fairly certain it\u2019s all I am.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I\u2019ve missed an evil element right on my doorstep. Either my powers of observation are lamentably poor, or this evil element is so ingrained into the fabric of our lives here that it\u2019s become invisible to me. And, James, I don\u2019t know which is worse.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By the next station, Leo was left with a lapful of shiny foil paper, gimcrack toys, and zero intact crackers. He had unraveled his mystery and was left with nothing but trash.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
