Thud<\/a><\/em> (2005) Terry Pratchett<\/a><\/p>\n

I think part of it may be a fear that I won’t be able to put a new book down, which would lead to short sleep, which would exacerbate my OCD…<\/p>\n

Yeah. Something like that.<\/p>\n

This was a reread of Thud<\/em>, another Discworld novel about the Night Watch (or really, in this case, at this point it’s just The Watch).<\/p>\n

Commander Vimes has his hands full, what with Vetinari ordering a vampire onto the watch, fighting breaking out all over town on the anniversary of Koom Valley, and the most important ritual–reading “Where’s My Cow” every night to young Sam, at six o’clock sharp.<\/p>\n

Vetinari waved a languid hand. ‘But full carts congesting the street, Vimes, is a sign of progress.’ he declared.<\/p>\n

‘Only in the figurative sense, sir,’ said Vimes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

‘All right,’ said Vimes, in the ringing vacuum. ‘Who’s going to be the first to tell me a huge whopper? Corporal Nobbs?”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

‘Didn’t know what’d hit ’em, eh?’ said Vimes.<\/p>\n

Detrius looked mildly offended at this. ‘Oh no, sir,’ he said, ‘I made sure they knew I hit ’em.’<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Of course, I’d forgotten about all the bits in Koom Valley somehow. It’s odd, how I always forget what a tremendous commentary on the world these books are, until I’m reading those bits again.
