A Spell of Vengeance<\/a><\/em> (2012) D.B. Jackson<\/a><\/p>\n

\"Spell_Vengeance\"<\/a>I’m not quite sure how I missed this story when it first came out, especially considering that I read the first Ethan Kaille book last year.<\/p>\n

But I’m not sorry I didn’t read this first, because it might have made me reluctant to read the first book, which I did enjoy.<\/p>\n

Ethan Kaille is a thieftaker in Boston, just prior to the Revolutionary War. Earlier, he had been convicted as a mutineer and that, combined with the fact he is a spell-caster, makes him a figure of suspicion.<\/p>\n

So he is greatly surprised when the sheriff, who has threatened him on previous occasions, brings him two men who have been threatened by magic.<\/p>\n

What bothered me about the story was the fact that the sheriff is antagonistic to Ethan, so I don’t understand why he didn’t go after Ethan at the end of the story.<\/p>\n

But aside from that, it was an interesting short story.
