So a missing children case in the country seems like a pleasant distraction in comparison to his thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>But Peter is still a smart-ass.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>If I\u2019d been about four ranks higher up the hierarchy I\u2019d have regarded it as an opportunity to realize additional intelligence assets through enhanced stakeholder engagement. But I\u2019m just a constable so I didn\u2019t.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSo the moon effects magic, why?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m working on several theories,\u201d I said . \u201cBut I\u2019m currently favoring the hypothesis that the moon has a seemingly arbitrary effect on magic because it likes to piss me off.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a theory with a high degree of applicability to other spheres of life,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And he still makes the most marvelous observations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We trooped off behind her into waist high bracken, down something that was not so much a path as a statistical variation in the density of the undergrowth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And we still have Dr Walid.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I asked what the weapon had been like. \u201cAt least sixty centimeters long, circular cross section and tapering to a sharp point,\u201d said Dr. Walid. \u201cPossibly a spiral configuration.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n\u201cSo you think it\u2019s a (redacted)?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t like to jump to conclusions,\u201d he said. \u201cNot without more evidence.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you achieve nothing else,\u201d he said, \u201cget me a tissue sample.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>That just cracks me up.<\/p>\n<p>I found the dedication lovely:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>This book is dedicated to Sir Terry Pratchett OBE, who has stood like a wossname upon the rocky shores of our imaginations\u2014 the better to guide us safely into harbor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And that dedication only made me more the certain that this bit wasn&#8217;t accidental:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For a car that was older than my mother, it had a pretty decent stereo on which Lilly played Queen\u2019s Greatest Hits but only, she explained, because her sister had borrowed her iPod and hadn\u2019t given it back and Queen\u2019s Greatest Hits was the only CD in the stereo.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I was quite gleeful upon reading that passage, and am pretty sure there were other references I missed the first time round, but never fear, I have the audio version ready to go as soon as I finish my current book.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m coming to think that I love Ben Aaronovitch the same way I love Robert B Parker&#8211;the dialog makes the story, and all that marvelous dialog and commentary is the icing on the cake of some lovely world building and mystery.<br \/>\n<strong>Rating: 9\/10<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Published by DAW<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foxglove Summer (2014) Ben Aaronovitch When dealing with the law, having a mysterious past is contraindicated.
