The first in 1821 is the story of Orfeo, a young Englishman studying music in Italy, and of Lodovico Malvezzi, an Milanese.<\/p>\n<p>The second part, set in 1825, is how Julian Kestrel, traveling in Italy, searches for Orfeo&#8217;s sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>As always when reading historicals, I am struck by how different the world is now.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Demanding a constitution! Any idiot ought to be able to see that a ruler could not apply the same laws to everyone\u2014nobles and peasants, enemies and friends.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t a crime for a man to guard his privacy,\u201d Carlo declared.<br \/>\n\u201cOn the contrary, Signor Conte,\u201d Grimani said sternly, \u201cno one within the realm of His Imperial Majesty Francis the First of Austria is entitled to keep his name, activities, or opinions secret.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese Bow Street Runners are not police. As I understand it, they work for hire, and their power is greatly restricted.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cIf you mean that they can\u2019t make a search or arrest without cause, that\u2019s true,\u201d said Julian.<br \/>\n\u201cOur police are more efficient,\u201d said Grimani. \u201cThey make the search or arrest in order to find the cause.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There is also a rather distressing reminder of the rights&#8211;or rather lack thereof&#8211;of women at that time period. Which serves to remind me how glad I am to live in the future.<\/p>\n<p>But the best bits, of course, were learning more bits and pieces about Julian Kestrel, and his interactions with various people.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI seem to have risen in the world,\u201d Julian observed to Dipper.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s on account of these, sir.\u201d Dipper handed him two letters. \u201cThey come for you while you was out. The waiters didn\u2019t want to fork \u2019em out to me without a buonamano\u201d\u2014he rubbed his fingers together to signify money\u2014\u201cbut I said if they didn\u2019t, you\u2019d be glimflashy, and your bigwig pals\u2019d darken their daylights.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cI should have liked to hear how that translated into Milanese.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of the new characters, I especially liked Donati.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI suppose I expect less of life, and so enjoy what pleasures I do find all the more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Reading this book made me melancholy.
