It also finds a young woman in his office with claims of patients at a nursing home being murdered for the legacy they left to the church and home.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018No, Commissario, it\u2019s not your mother. Nothing will happen to her.\u2019 She paused then, embarrassed at how that sounded and at the grim truth contained in her words: the only thing that could ever again happen to Brunetti\u2019s mother was death.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Except that Suor\u2019Immacolata is no longer around to calm Brunetti&#8217;s mother.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Suor\u2019Eleanora, a woman whom the course of years had turned sour and to whom the vows meant poverty of spirit, chastity of humour, and obedience only to some rigorous concept of duty. The fact that his mother could be, even if for an instant, in the care of this woman enraged him as a man; the fact that the casa di cura was considered to be one of the best available shamed him as a citizen.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sadly, things seem to be the same around the world.<\/p>\n<p>We also truly begin to learn of Signorina Elettra&#8217;s skills with the computer&#8211;skills that will become more and more useful over the course of the series.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018If they were recorded here, can you get the information?\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018Of course.\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018How?\u2019<br \/>\nShe looked down at her skirt and brushed away an invisible speck. \u2018I\u2019m afraid it\u2019s illegal.\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018What\u2019s illegal?\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018The way I get the information.\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018Which is &#8230;?\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018I\u2019m not sure you can understand, Commissario, or that I could explain it to you adequately, but there are ways of discovering the codes which give access to almost all information. The more public the information is \u2013 a city hall, public records \u2013 the easier it is to discover the code. And once a person has that, it\u2019s as if &#8230; well, it\u2019s as if they\u2019d gone home and left the door to the office open and the lights on.\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018Is this true of all government agencies?\u2019 he asked uneasily.<br \/>\n\u2018I think you\u2019d prefer not to know the answer,\u2019 she said, her smile gone.<br \/>\n\u2018How easy is it to get this information?\u2019 he asked.<br \/>\n\u2018I\u2019d say it\u2019s in direct proportion to the skill of the person looking for it.\u2019<br \/>\n\u2018And how skilled are you, Signorina?\u2019 The question summoned back a smile, a very small one.<br \/>\n\u2018I think that\u2019s a question I\u2019d prefer not to answer, Commissario.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And we also see Vianello starting to come into his own in this story.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018Well?\u2019 Brunetti asked as he took the list from his pocket again.
