We get to enjoy the usual characters, of course.<\/p>\n

Signorina Elettra was at his door before he could answer his own question. \u2018Please come in,\u2019 he called. \u2018You found it very quickly.\u2019 Such had not always been the case with the Questura files, not until her blessed arrival. \u2018How long have you been with us now, Signorina?\u2019 he asked.
\n\u2018It will be three years this summer, Commissario. Why do you ask?\u2019
\nIt was on his lips to say, \u2018So that I might better count my joys,\u2019 but that sounded to him too much like one of her own rhetorical flights. Instead, he answered, \u2018So I can order flowers to celebrate the day.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And we get another peek into his relationship with his father in law.<\/p>\n

He took the time to fold the paper neatly in two, and then in two again. \u2018It\u2019s become so bad, hasn\u2019t it?\u2019 he asked, holding the paper up between them.
\n\u2018Not if you like cannibalism, incest, and infanticide,\u2019 Brunetti answered.
\n\u2018Did you read it today?\u2019 When Brunetti shook his head, the Count explained. \u2018There was a story this morning about a woman in Tehran who killed her husband, ground up his heart, and ate it in something called ab goosht\u2019 Before Brunetti could register either surprise or disgust, the Count went on, \u2018But then they opened a parenthesis and gave the recipe for ab goosht: tomatoes, onions, and chopped meat.\u2019 He shook his head. \u2018Who are they writing for? Who wants to know that sort of thing?\u2019
\nBrunetti had long ago abandoned any faith he had ever had in the taste of the general public, and so he answered, \u2018The readers of Il Gazzettino, I\u2019d say.\u2019
\nThe Count looked across at him and nodded. \u2018I suppose you\u2019re right.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

And it’s good there is lightheartedness (of a sort), because the mystery is pretty awful when Brunetti finally discovers the resolution.<\/p>\n

We also get a peek into Brunetti’s past, when we see some of his relationship with his brother (and of course, their regular visits to their mother).<\/p>\n

Though it does touch on something I’ve felt for awhile.<\/p>\n

\u2018The poor mother,\u2019 Elettra said and then added, \u2018I wonder if she\u2019s religious.\u2019
\n\u2018Why?\u2019
\n\u2018It helps people when terrible things happen, when people die.\u2019
\n\u2018Are you?\u2019 Brunetti asked.
\n\u2018Per carit\u00e0,\u2019 she said, pushing the idea back towards him with raised hands. \u2018The last time I was in church was for my confirmation. It would have upset my parents if I hadn\u2019t done it, which was pretty much the same for all my friends. But since then I\u2019ve had nothing to do with it.\u2019
\n\u2018Then why did you say that it helps people?\u2019
\n\u2018Because it\u2019s true,\u2019 she said simply. \u2018The fact that I don\u2019t believe in it doesn\u2019t prevent it from helping other people. I\u2019d be a fool to deny that.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
