\"The-Countess-Conspiracy\"<\/a>Set in England in 1867.<\/p>\n

I really REALLY love this story. And I loved it just as much if not more the second time through, since I was just waiting for the awesome bits.<\/p>\n

There was nothing shameful about the figure Sebastian was pointing to, not unless one harbored an irrational hatred for bar charts.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t talking of seduction,\u201d he said. \u201cI was talking of not seduction, which, as I\u2019m sure you have surmised, is the exact opposite of seduction.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s specious,\u201d Violet retorted. \u201cIf I asked you not to talk of elephants and you wandered around bellowing about not-elephants, you\u2019d be mentioning elephants with every breath. The column of all things that are not elephants includes marsupials, canines\u2014\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe column of everything that is not an elephant does not include not-elephants?\u201d he inquired, innocently examining his nails. \u201cThat\u2019s counter-intuitive.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThe column of conversational topics,\u201d Violet stressed, \u201cthat are not elephant related does not include a discussion of the elephant-shaped hole in the conversation!\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think you have a secret. It\u2019s like you were made by some fiend of a blacksmith. You\u2019re a puzzle without a solution. There is no way to undo you. All I can do is learn to avoid the razors.\u201d <\/p>\n

She breathed out slowly and picked up her pen. \u201cYes,\u201d she said softly. \u201cThat\u2019s me. Good for nothing but cutting. Made by an insane blacksmith.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cCome, Violet. I know better than to woo you with confusing data sets.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cClearly, you don\u2019t know me as well as you think. Confusing data sets are my specialty.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Violet narrowed her eyes at him. \u201cI know what you\u2019re doing. You\u2019re trying to distract me with science.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cOf course I am.\u201d He winked at her. \u201cAnd it\u2019s going to work.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re trying to distract me with falsified science,\u201d Violet accused.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I love this so very very very much.
