{"id":6193,"date":"2016-11-13T16:49:14","date_gmt":"2016-11-13T21:49:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/?p=6193"},"modified":"2024-08-09T10:11:15","modified_gmt":"2024-08-09T14:11:15","slug":"tremontaine-season-one-volume-one","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/6193","title":{"rendered":"Tremontaine: Season One Volume One"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2g46MWS\">Tremontaine: Season One Volume One<\/a><\/em> (2016) by Patty Bryant, Joel Derfner, Alaya Dawn Johnson, <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/kushner.php\">Ellen Kushner<\/a>, Malinda Lo, Racheline Maltese and Paul Witcover<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2g46MWS\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/reading\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Tremontaine-Series-Cover.jpg?resize=200%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"tremontaine-series-cover\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6194\" \/><\/a>Let me explain&#8230; No, let me sum up.<\/p>\n<p>There is a book called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/3553\">Swordspoint<\/a><\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/kushner.php\">Ellen Kushner<\/a> that is one of my favorites&#8211;a comfort read.<\/p>\n<p>After <em>Swordspoint<\/em> came <em>The Fall of the Kings<\/em>, co-written with Delia Sherman, then came <em>The Privilege of the Sword<\/em>, which a sequel of sorts to <em><br \/>\nThen there is Tremontaine, which is a prequel to <\/em><em>Swordspoint<\/em>, set years before, when Diane, the Duchess Tremontaine has not yet become the power behind the political machinations, although she is the power behind her husband&#8217;s politics.<\/p>\n<p>The duke had spent the better part of two decades not noticing things about his duchess, after all, and, unbeknownst to him, it had served him well.<\/p>\n<p>But aside from Diane, there characters new to the series: <\/p>\n<p>Micah the mathematical genius. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cSilver?\u201d Tess shouted. \u201cI\u2019ll give you twenty brass minnows, and that\u2019s more than they\u2019re worth.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTen silver, then, and I\u2019ll throw in a good linen shirt.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMicah already has a shirt. Three.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Micah stopped paying attention. The numbers seemed random to her, and she didn\u2019t understand how Tess could make them change just by arguing about it.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Kaab the fallen daughter of Baalm chocolate traders.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI am a first daughter of a first daughter of the Balam. I have been trained from birth to the service. I do not get lost.\u201d For very long, she amended internally, for honesty\u2019s sake. Confusing left and north didn\u2019t count.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Rafe Fenton the scholar and son of a local merchant.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy argument is with my father, not with you. And as my father isn\u2019t here to listen, I\u2019m afraid I have been rude to no purpose.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut you would be rude to a purpose?\u201d she asked. He blinked. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell\u00a0.\u00a0.\u00a0. of course. Even my enemies would grant me that.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and many others. <\/p>\n<p>We also get appearances by familiar characters including a younger Vincent Applethorpe.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting, though I will admit that I was initially unsure about Kinwiinik&#8211;the spelling of all the names and words were a bit much, but eventually I got used to the names and was able to keep people straight. Mostly.<\/p>\n<p>The different chapters (or episodes) are written by different authors, so there is a different feel to each chapter, but it still flows well, and if some chapters I liked better than others, well, that&#8217;s fine.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2eQWLqc\">first chapter is available for free<\/a>, if you wanted to see if this was for you.
