{"id":65,"date":"2005-04-05T22:15:20","date_gmt":"2005-04-06T02:15:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/?p=65"},"modified":"2021-06-06T06:46:49","modified_gmt":"2021-06-06T10:46:49","slug":"jingo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/65","title":{"rendered":"Jingo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iPR8fv\">Jingo<\/a><\/em> (1997) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/prachett.php\">Terry Pratchett<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2iPR8fv\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/reading\/wp-content\/uploads\/2005\/04\/Jingo.jpg?resize=192%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6948\" \/><\/a>What surprised me most about this book was that it was written in 1997. <\/p>\n<p>A new island has risen between Ankh Morpork and Klatch, and war seems to be the only way to determine who really owns the island. <\/p>\n<p>Jingo features Commander Samuel Vimes and the Watch, including Sgt Colon and Corporal Nobbs, Captain Carrot and Angua, and Sgt Detrius. There are some others of course, but I have to admit that those are my favorites.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Well, because it is <i>submersed<\/i> in a <i>marine<\/i> environment &#8220;I&#8217;ve always called it the Going-Under-the-Water-Safely Device,&#8221; said Leonard, behind him. &#8220;But usually I just call it the Boat.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I think what I like best about Terry Pratchett is that he gets to be political, but funny at the same time. I mean just look at the title:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Main Entry: jin\u00b7go\u00b7ism<br \/>\nPronunciation: &#8216;ji[ng]-(&#8220;)gO-&#8220;i-z&amp;m<br \/>\nFunction: <em>noun<\/em><br \/>\n: extreme chauvinism or nationalism marked especially by a belligerent foreign policy<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Of course now that I look at it, that pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the book.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jingo (1997) Terry Pratchett What surprised me most about this book was that it was written in 1997.
