{"id":9111,"date":"2017-06-27T15:48:50","date_gmt":"2017-06-27T19:48:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/?p=9111"},"modified":"2024-05-12T19:29:32","modified_gmt":"2024-05-12T23:29:32","slug":"stiletto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/9111","title":{"rendered":"Stiletto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2thSw2f\">Stiletto<\/a><\/em> (2016) <a href=\"http:\/\/klishis.com\/Books\/authors\/OMalley_Daniel.php\">Daniel O&#8217;Malley<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2thSw2f\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/klishis.com\/reading\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Stiletto.jpg?resize=193%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"193\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9112\" \/><\/a>I really enjoyed <em><a href=\"https:\/\/klishis.com\/reading\/archives\/8887\">The Rook<\/a><\/em>, so I was thrilled when the sequel, <em>Stiletto<\/em>, went on sale.<\/p>\n<p>At first, I was a tiny bit disappointed that Rook Myfanwy Thomas wasn&#8217;t the main character, but she made a later appearance, and I came to really like the new characters introduced: Felicity and Odette.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It hadn\u2019t always been easy, but so far, she had not caused any catastrophes, despite the fact that she was effectively masquerading as herself\u2014 a role for which she was not terribly qualified.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And of course the same humor from the first book.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cBut where did you get my urine?\u201d she asked. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Checquy has samples of everyone\u2019s everything,\u201d said Odgers cheerfully. \u201cRemember, during your time at the Estate, they kept taking specimens of your every fluid and solid?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was for scientific research!\u201d exclaimed Felicity. \u201cAnd it was years ago!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWould someone else\u2019s fresh urine be better?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cYou\u2019re getting a bodyguard?\u201d Alessio asked Odette. \u201cWhy? Is this related to the fact that at the end of every day, you\u2019re wearing a different outfit than the one you started in?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t be ridiculous,\u201d said Odette. \u201cI haven\u2019t been doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, you have,\u201d said Alessio.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI know I was distracted on the way here, but I\u2019m fairly certain this is not the car I arrived in.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s right, Rook Thomas.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo\u2026 were we robbed?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, but the deaths at the site have already caught the attention of the press. They\u2019re hanging around outside, so we\u2019ll have to go in the back. I thought a stretch limousine might draw some attention.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI suppose that makes sense,\u201d said Thomas grudgingly. \u201cGood thinking.\u201d She sighed and looked at the diminutive and disreputable vehicle. \u201cWhere did we even get this car? Whose is it?\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPawn Thistlethwaite\u2019s. He said we could borrow it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPawn Thistlethwaite came in this?\u201d asked the Rook. \u201cThat can\u2019t be right, I know what his salary is. Make a note, Ingrid, we should have him screened for drugs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s his son\u2019s car,\u201d said the EA. \u201cI gather his is at the mechanic\u2019s.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>THAT bit cracked me up.<\/p>\n<p>What I found particularly fascinating about this story was how the Checquy and the Grafters each viewed the other as monsters&#8211;the Grafters because of the changes they made to themselves and the Checquy because they were born strange and mutated.<\/p>\n<p>What I LOVED was that these are strong independent female characters who are the starts of the books. The male characters are all supporting cast and none of them are male romantic leads (although there are occasional hints of romance).
