\u201cYou tell me you don\u2019t know Rojack,\u201d I said. \u201cI go out there and find out you do. You tell me you never heard of Wilfred Pomeroy. I go out there and he tells me you\u2019re married.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a liar,\u201d Jill said serenely. \u201cI never have heard of him.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cHe tells me that you never got a divorce.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI did too,\u201d Jill said. \u201cI told you he\u2019s a liar.\u201d <\/p>\n

Hawk smiled from the windowsill, like a man appreciating a funny remark. <\/p>\n

\u201cIf you had told me the truth you\u2019d have saved me a couple of days\u2019 driving and talking.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I find this story fascinating. Jill Joyce behaves terribly towards everyone, constantly lies, constantly drinks to excess, and hits on every male she comes across. Despite that, Spenser (and Susan) see something broken in her that needs help, and so he persists.<\/p>\n

I also love Spenser’s compassion and depth.<\/p>\n

It was as if he were a shattered cup, badly mended, with the shards of himself barely clinging together.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s a sad and lovely description.<\/p>\n

Spenser mentions Korea twice in this book, so haven’t stopped mentioning that yet.<\/p>\n

We’re starting to get to the bits about irritate me about Susan.<\/p>\n

I was watching Susan. Her normal lunch was something like a lettuce leaf, dressing on the side.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I assume that is supposed to be Spenser being aware of how difficult Susan is, but loving her anyway, but focusing on her eating habits irritates me to no end.
