Lord John and the Hand of Devils<\/a><\/em> (2007) Diana Gabaldon<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cLord John and the Hellfire Club\u201d is set in London in 1757.<\/p>\n

\u201cLord John and the Succubus\u201d is set in Germany in 1758.<\/p>\n

\u201cLord John and the Haunted Soldier\u201d is set mostly in London in 1759.<\/p>\n

The novels Lord John and the Private Matter<\/em> and Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade<\/em> fall between those three novellas, so if you want to do everything all proper, read the first novella, then read Lord John and the Private Matter<\/em>, read the second novella, then Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade<\/em>, then finish off with the third novella.<\/p>\n

I really like these novellas, and although I mention it every time, I just leave these passages here to remind you why.<\/p>\n

\u201cA succubus is a she-demon,\u201d the old lady said, precisely. \u201cIt comes to men in dreams, and has congress with them, in order to extract from them their seed.\u201d <\/p>\n

The princess\u2019s eyes went perfectly round. She hadn\u2019t known, Grey observed. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d she asked. \u201cWhat does she do with it?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

and <\/p>\n

\u201cA witch?\u201d Grey repeated, and felt an odd frisson run down his back, as though someone had touched his nape with a cold finger. \u201cWhat did this witch look like?\u201d The child stared back at him, uncomprehending. \u201cLike a witch,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Both of those passages make me laugh every time.
