A Grave Matter<\/a><\/em> (2016) Anna Lee Huber<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>Set in Scotland in 1831<\/p>\n

After the death of her friend in the previous book, Kiera has fled to her brother’s home (her sister and brother-in-law are in Edinburgh during her sister’s pregnancy), but a New Year’s Eve murder pulls her into another investigation, and back into the public eye she has been avoiding for so long.<\/p>\n

I do appreciate her relationships with her brother.<\/p>\n

Certainly, I had danced with Trevor far more than any other gentleman of my acquaintance, for he had been forced to partner me by our childhood dancing master. We had stepped on each other\u2019s toes and smacked one another in the face with an errant hand too many times to count.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

More importantly, her brother points out that she needs to come to terms with her father, and how he didn’t protect her from Sir Anthony.<\/p>\n

(T)hen Trevor spoke. \u201cYou always go to Mother\u2019s grave.\u201d Our eyes met for the first time since he\u2019d joined me, and I frowned. \u201cWhen you come here,\u201d he clarified. \u201cYou always go to Mother\u2019s grave. You seem to barely be able to look at Father\u2019s.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t be silly,\u201d I scoffed uncomfortably. \u201cMother\u2019s is just closer to the tree, and thus out of the wind.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cBut it\u2019s not always windy when you visit here.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cTrue. And I stand before Father\u2019s grave then.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cBut you don\u2019t.\u201d His voice was gentle, but certain.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I like how it takes her time to come to terms with her past, and how her family gently but firmly pushes her to do so.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s got their hurts. No matter who they are. It\u2019s easy teh forget that when we\u2019re no\u2019 willin\u2019 teh look too deep.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I also enjoyed watching Kiera and Gage’s relationship progress.<\/p>\n

But why have I never seen you dance at the dinners and other soirees I\u2019ve attended with you?\u201d I glanced back at him with a sardonic lift to my eyebrows. \u201cNo one asked.\u201d I turned to survey the crowd surrounding the dancers inside the ballroom, not wanting to see pity in his eyes. But a tug at my wrist pulled my attention back to him. \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d He scrawled his name across my dance card in several places. \u201cClaiming my dances before they\u2019re all taken.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s another lovely escape.
