History
Coal mines, coke ovens, and timber industry stripped the gorge until 1910 to 1914 the area burned til all that was left was bare rock. The Monongahela National Forest was established in 1920 in attempt to recover this and other areas.
Features
A 1000-foot chasm separating Backbone Mountain from Canaan Mountain. Spruce, hemlock pine forest with oak, maple, yellow poplar, and rhododendron. Douglas falls. Olsen Fire Tower.
