Pedometer Testing: Day Two

I’m going to update this through the course of the day.

I’m wearing the Withings and my beat-up FitBit next to each other, clipped to my belt. The Omron and the old FitBit that don’t hold a charge are inside a cargo pocket.

Yes, I AM putting this into Excel, calculating the differences, and I’ll probably make a chart of it. Like I do.

I WILL DO SCIENCE TO IT

FitBit = clipped to belt
Pulse = clipped to belt
Omron = in pocket
FitBit 2 = in pocket

8:15 AM
FitBit: 1099
Pulse: 912
Omron: 1013
FitBit 2: 1147

9:15
FitBit: 1802
Pulse: 1600
Omron: 1701
FitBit 2: 1837

10:15
FitBit: 2760
Pulse: 2539
Omron: 2622
FitBit 2: 2734

11:15
FitBit: 3817
Pulse: 3522
Omron: 3615
FitBit 2: 3796

1:00
FitBit: 9055
Pulse: 8672
Omron: 8818
FitBit 2: 8991

2:10
FitBit: 9868
Pulse: 9402
Omron: 9526
FitBit 2: 9836

3:00
I spent this entire time in my desk chair
FitBit: 9875
Pulse: 9402
Omron: 9526
FitBit 2: 9836

3:45 PM
FitBit: 10217
Pulse: 9697
Omron: 9828
FitBit 2: 10195

4:15 PM
After walking a mile
FitBit: 12279
Pulse: 11718
Omron: 1180
FitBit 2: 12278

5:00 PM
After weight bearing / resistance exercise
FitBit: 12572
Pulse: 11956
Omron: 12005
FitBit 2: 12602

Well, this is quite fascinating!

Here is the chart of the difference between the Omron (my arbitrary standard) and the other pedometers over the course of the day.

difference chart thursday

This is the difference between the Omron and the other pedometers over the entire time period. What you can see here is that the Pulse sometimes got more steps, and sometimes fewer than the Omron. The FitBits, for the most part, counted more steps than the Omron, which is why by the end of the time period their count was so much higher than the Omron and the Pulse.

This next chart looks confusing, but bear with me.

time period chart thurs

This chart looks individual time periods. It’s showing you the steps taken during a specific time period, say, 9:15 to 10:15 and ALSO the difference between the Omron and the other pedometers during that same time frame.

This is showing that the FitBits were counting a significantly different number of steps when I was doing things other than walking. Essentially, I conclude that the FitBits counted steps when I was sitting still or driving (or doing crunches).

What this seems to show is that the FitBits and the Pulse counted steps when I was exercising and driving that the Omron didn’t count, and the FitBits counted steps when I was sitting still and standing that the Omron and Pulse didn’t count.

The difference when I was walking was fascinating. I believe that tomorrow I will have to wear all three pedometers on my belt, so I can see if that changes anything.

And, a quick look at the sleep data.
