Latin Quiz Answers

Erin sent me the answers to the Latin quiz.

1. Oregon state motto: “Alis volat propriis”
He flies with his own wings

2. Missouri: “Salus populi suprema lex est”

“The welfare of the people is the supreme law”

3. Idaho: “Esto perpetua”

“Be always”

4. West Virginia: “Montani semper liberi”
“Mountain men are always free”

5. Arizona: “Ditat Deus”
Translates to “God Enriches”. I was thinking of dico, dicere, which is the verb to speak. I don’t think I ever learned the one for enrich.

6. Michigan: “Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice”
“If you are seeking a pleasant peninsula, look around”

7. Mississippi: “Virtute et armis”
“By courage and arms”

8. South Carolina: “Dum spiro, spero”
“While I breathe, I hope”

9. Kansas: “ad astra per aspera”
“To the stars through difficulties”

10. Virginia: “Sic semper tyrannis”
“Thus always to tyrants”

11. “Sic transit gloria mundi”
“Thus passes the glory of the world”

12. “Audaces fortuna juvat”
“Fortune favors the bold”

“Seize the day”
