Meow! Meow! Meow!

I won’t say that my grandmother has become a cat person.

However, any time she walks past the bookcase, Kit is right there, meowing her head off, because about 50% of the time my grandmother will stop and give her a handful of treats.

It is truly amazing that Kit doesn’t weight 20 pounds, because she will eat treats until she gags–despite the fact that we leave food in their bowls 24 hours a day.

Golden Compass

There’s a website for the Golden Compass movie that’s due out this winter.

If you play around on the website, you can find your own daemon.

Mine is an ocelot named Erasmus.

I’m generally not a fan of movies made from books. I’ll have to check out the trailer closely on this one.

Curlz

Me: Dear, can you do me a huge favor, and help me put the hair stuff in my (freshly washed) hair? I can’t do a good job with only one hand.
Michael: Okay. I suppose.
Me: First this (Curl enhancer/defrizzer). Rub it in your finger tips and then through my hair.
Michael: Okay.
Me: Now this (anti-frizz serum). Rub it on your palms and then through my hair, making sure you get the ends.
Michael: Okay.
Me: Now…
Michael: More?!
Me: Yes. Rub this (gel for coarse hair) on your fingertips and then through my hair, again, making sure you get the ends.
Michael: Okay.
Me: That should be good enough.
Michael: Jeesh!
Me: Now you know why it takes me so long to do anything with my hair. And we even skipped (the humectant).

And this is why you really don’t want curly hair–at least my curly hair. Because despite all the crap I put in it, one good breeze makes me look like a haystack–and you can forget ever driving with the car windows down.

Icadyptes salasi

Three words:

Giant tropical penguins

Unfortunately, they’re just fossils, but still, how cool is a five foot tall penguin?

If It Weren’t for Bad Luck…

…I wouldn’t have any luck at all.

It started out innocently enough. I was doing the prep work for dinner. I try to do it early, so I’m not rushed, because I tend to hurt myself when I’m rushed (ironic foreshadowing).

I was making pizza, so I decided that onion rings would look nice, so I was cutting slices off a whole onion when the knife slipped (you saw that coming, didn’t you?) and I cut a substantial chunk out of the side of my finger at the top joint. (I did mention I was cutting onion, didn’t I?)

As it doesn’t want to stop bleeding, Michael & I rig up bandages so the wound is covered and we wrap another bandage tight to apply pressure,

Then I walk around all afternoon with my finger sticking up, to keep the cut elevated and above he heart. (When you’re as clumsy as I am you learn all the tricks.)

Four hours later, after we finish up dinner, my mom goes to help me change the bandages (not something I could manage one handed.). Despite everything, the cut is bleeding as bad as it when it first happened.

So, off to urgent care we go. All four of us (my parents sat in the lobby and played cards with Michael (we’ve spent a fair amount of time in emergency rooms, my family has.))

So, the nurse looks at it. Then the PA comes in and looks at it. Then the PA comes back with the doctor. At one point there were actually four people in the room with me: the doctor, the PA, and two nurses. After reassuring me that I’m not going to bleed to death (my response: I certainly hope not!) the doctor says I’ve managed to sever an artery. He doesn’t want to cauterize it if he doesn’t have to, since it could cause nerve damage since there is an inch size chunk of skin/flesh missing. So I get some kind of bandage with a clotting agent, and he says that it may continue to bleed like this for a few days, so I need to come back tomorrow so they can change the bandage.

Then they wrap my entire finger in white gauze, till it looks twice its size.

Then they put me in a SLING to keep my finger elevated.

There was nothing I could do from there but laugh. All the way out to the lobby, all the way out to the car, all the way home.

Only I could slice one finger and end up with my entire arm in a sling.

Boy is work tomorrow going to be fun.

Hidden Giant Flame?

Why are there so many (mostly dead) moths in the Health Sciences Center?

Seriously, just walking through the atrium I saw five. They’re all over the first and second floors (maybe higher, but I rarely go above the second floor.)

They weren’t here three weeks ago, then suddenly they’re all over the place. There was even a dead moth in my office last week.

Where on earth did they come from? I don’t remember seeing a plague of caterpillars previously. How did they get in the building? Is this part of some diabolical plan?

Construction? In Morgantown?

For those who don’t get WVU E-News or the local paper:

CONSTRUCTION, TRAFFIC DELAYS

1) Construction to begin Monday on Willowdale sidewalk project
Work is set to begin Monday on the Willowdale sidewalk project, spearheaded by WVU’s Student Government Association (SGA). The project is expected to be completed by mid-August in time for the start of the fall semester. March-Westin was the successful bidder on the project, which will add a 5-foot-wide sidewalk along Willowdale Road, a popular walkway for students and Morgantown residents adjacent to Milan Puskar Stadium, Ruby Memorial Hospital and the WVU Health Sciences Center. When complete, the new paved area will connect to a city sidewalk leading downtown and will be lit as well as handicapped accessible. The public should expect Willowdale Road to be reduced to one lane for intermittent periods while crews are at work.

Ew?

In the lab, the last group of computers face the wall, which means that you can’t see what’s on the monitors. As far as we’re concerned, anyone who sits at those computers is porn surfing, but there’s nothing we can do about it, since we can’t catch ’em at it.

Which brings me to today.

As I was walking back to my office (in the back of the lab) I noticed one of the creeps who always sits in the back of the lab.

Then I noticed that his keyboard tray was shaking.

I really hope he was just playing some action game, but I wasn’t about to look closer.
