Now That It’s Over…

Holy Cow!

As if the morning wasn’t rough enough, as soon as I got my computer on, I got an IM from the GA at the front desk that there were two cops in the facility.

And they were there to proctor an exam or something.

Or maybe protect a teacher or student.

That of course got an, “I’ll be right up,” from me.

Apparently a resident got booted from their program and made random threats, so the University Police were here to make sure that if said loser appeared, nothing untoward would happen.

Thing is, it sounds a lot worse than it felt. The officers were relaxed and didn’t think the individual would actually do anything, but all things considered, felt it better to take the threat seriously. So we had at least one cop here for the entire six hour exam.

One can only imagine how the other students taking the exam felt. (Luckily they were squirreled away in a classroom and the cop sat out front where he could see the front door of the facility, so they should have been able to focus once they got started.)

Or the professor who had been threatened.

On one level you can almost understand how someone could be upset about getting kicked out of their residency. But my understanding stops when someone threatens to come back with a gun, and instead makes me wonder what this creep had done to get booted out of the program, and to hope that this is the end of her career.

Because that’s just a crappy thing to do.

Today

Happy Easter to those who celebrate.

I almost didn’t post this, but decided that today isn’t the day for my own personal beliefs and doubts to e important.

Free to a Good Home

While going through the great CD and DVD organizing project, I found several things that I have NO IDEA why they are in my house.

So if anyone wants ’em, you give me shipping and I’ll send ’em to you. Alternatively, you can come to my house and pick them up.

Chat Chat Chat

So I just discovered that I can log into AOL chat through gmail now! Which means that (in theory) I can now chat with my friend Susan. Who puts off replying to me e-mails until any children mentioned therein have grown up and graduated from college.

So this makes me happy!

The End of Michelle’s Week of Fun

Tonight was Peking Acrobats.

To say that the Arts Series is unevenly spaced is putting it mildly. We went four months without going to a show, then we get two in one week.

But that’s fine, because it was all fun.

Peking Acrobats were great! I love circus performances as long as they’re humans only. Something about animal trainers kinda bothers me. But feats of acrobatics and daring do? Bring it on!

Almost as entertaining were the kids behind us (except when they were screeching. That was no good.) During one of the first tumbling acts, one kid kept saying, “I can do that! I can do that!” To which I thought, “sure you can kid.” So when they got to jar balancing act, I whispered to Michael, “I can see those parents behind us are going to end up with broken crockery.” That was followed by the plate balancing, which was pretty amazing, since he had about 30 plates going at once) and I whispered to Michael, “and broken plates too.”

So if you here a lot of aggravated yelling from this end of the country this weekend, you’ll know what it was.

I have to say though, that for the most part I was more impressed by the women than the men. In the second half they did parallel acts, such as chair balancing and jar spinning, and I just found what the women did to be more impressive. Probably because they did more work together.

Regardless, it was a fantastic show (I’m going to use up my supply of positive adjectives at this rate) and I highly recommend it if you get the opportunity to see it.

First Sunday in March? You’ve GOT to be Kidding!

I. HATE. DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.

Now I’m going to be cranky for the rest of the week as I try to adjust to a new sleep schedule.

27 March

Today’s deaths:

William F Buckley Jr.

But of local interest, Myron Cope has died at the age of 72.

I may not have liked his voice but I liked him for what he did. And fans for tonight’s Pitt game are requested to bring Terrible Towels to remember Cope.

Let That Be a Lesson to Me

I’ve known for years that my depression is affected by the amount of sleep I get on a regular basis. And so I’ve been very careful to always get plenty of sleep–this week no exception.

However, apparently when one is under stress, “regular” amounts of sleep (about 7 to 7 1/2 hours for me) aren’t enough.

Yesterday we went to the gym after work, came home and ate dinner, and then after dinner I stretched out on the sofa to read. And immediately fell asleep. And slept until Michael woke me up to go to bed, where I slept for nine hours more.

That is a lot of sleeping, especially for someone who tries to get plenty of sleep on a normal basis.

So there you are. When you’re under stress, 7 to 8 hours of sleep may well not be enough.

Now if you’ll pardon me, I have to eat breakfast and run to the grocery store.

And then maybe come home for a nap.
