I’m Just a Little Black Rain Cloud!

You’ll be shocked to hear it, but it’s supposed to rain today in Morgantown.

Here’s the rain for June:

June Rain

June Rain

Here’s the rain so far for July:

July Rain

That’s 23.70in of rain so far this year.

For comparison, Seattle Washington has had 12.89in of rain this year.

Interregnum

WVU has an Interim President.

I know nothing about him, but here’s an article he wrote for the Journal Chronicle of Higher Education on tenure.

A google brings up some blurbs here and here and here.

ADDENDUM the First:
Here’s the WVU Press release.

As his military service was in the mid 1950s, I don’t see him as a candidate for the position as that would make him a minimum of 73. Looks like he’ll be a great interim though, and precisely what the University needs right now.

Beware the Mountainee

I was sent these by Stacie, but didn’t get a chance to post them until now. When Brian and Stacie were at Kennywood, they discovered these AWESOME prizes you could win.

Mountainee 1

Mountainee 2

I should expect as much from Pittsburgh.

Boo!

Michelle: (running up the basement stairs in the dark)
Michelle: You know, in 38 years, nothing has every grabbed you while you went up the stairs in the dark.
Michelle: That just means the odds are against me then, doesn’t it.

Yes, I really am that easily scared.

Map of Gas Prices

This US gas “temperature” map shows you gas prices around the country by color.

Sorry Alaska and Hawaii, apparently you’re not US states.

Top Fantasy Novels

As requested, here is a list of some of my favorite fantasy novels. It is completely arbitrary, and if I haven’t read a book, obviously that book won’t have made it on the list.

They’re vaguely organized into categories, however, those categories are entirely mine, and certainly won’t be found anywhere else. (For instance, I draw a distinction between urban and supernatural fantasy.

Oh. The author links are to another portion of my website. If you click on the book links from there you’ll be sent to Amazon, where I’ll eventually receive pennies for anything you buy after the click.

I have to fund my reading habit somehow.

Summertime and the Livin’ Is Easy

Really? Where?

I think we’ve been on the go for the past three weeks, and this week doesn’t look any better. I’d hoped to spend today relaxing, but ended up taking my grandmother shopping.

This is always an exercise in patience for me, because I like to get in and get out, and when I walk through most stores (excluding Jungle Jim’s of course) I tend to go at warp speed, grabbing what I need, finding the shortest line, and getting the hell out.

That doesn’t happen with my grandmother. She doesn’t move quickly, she has to look for what she wants, and she doesn’t move quickly. This is by far the hardest thing for me to deal with. I hate clothes shopping, and my feet hurt if I stand still for long. (I can walk forever, but as soon as I have to stand still, my feet start to ache.)

Of all the things I thought would be most difficult when my grandmother moved in, this is not what I expected.

On other fronts, I bought myself a photo printer for my birthday, and have had the chance to print one (1) picture since it arrived. I’ve also managed to read one eighth of a book in the past several weeks, which is a shocking lapse for me. I’ve got stacks of photo paper for different projects sitting here, but no idea when I’m going to try them out.

And this week, at least at work, looks to be just as insanely busy, as I’m scheduled to teach every single day this week. On the off chance I simply come home and collapse after work, I’ve got a couple scheduled posts set already. But if things get quiet, you know where I am.

Hiding under my bed with a flashlight and a book.

Flower Pr0n

Here’s some of the latest flower pr0n. My daylilies other than the Stella d’Oros are blooming now, which has led me to conclude that I need to redo my front flower beds and replace some of the stella d’oros with some other plants, including some daylilies that are being crowded out by the lavender and heather.

New Map

How West Virginians see America.

Some of the states will be more funny to West Virginians than others, but all in all it’s awfully funny.

Today’s Word

cucking-stool noun
Historical. A chair to which disorderly women were tied and then ducked into water or subjected to public ridicule as a punishment.
? origin Middle English: from obsolete cuck ?defecate?, of Scandinavian origin; so named because a stool containing a chamber pot was often used for the purpose.

That is definitely an obsolete word.

How Was Your 4th?

Mine?

4th July Umbrellas

Wet. Very very wet.

I took my camera down to watch the fireworks, because I want to play with the settings and see if I can learn to get nice pictures.

Didn’t even bother to get it out, it was so wet. Although part of me wishes I’d gotten a picture of everyone standing under umbrellas, watching the fire works.

But besides the wet, it was a good day. Crowded hot and humid in the house, but my aunt and uncle were visiting, and our friends Del and Kathy stopped by. And the food turned out well.

All in all, a good day.
