Word of the Day

—Origin Middle English baudry, from Old French baudre, of unknown ultimate origin.

Ten points to the person who guesses what first came to mind when I read this.

The Sandman Vol 6: Fables & Reflections

The Sandman Vol 6: Fables & Reflections (1993) Neil Gaiman

This may be my favorite Sandman collection. There are several different tales told, some in the past, some in the far past, and all excellent.

Shocking

An Australian man built up so much static electricity in his clothes as he walked that he burned carpets, melted plastic and sparked a mass evacuation.

I’ve said time and again that synthetic fabrics are bad!

Yee Haw!

I just got the message from my friend who lives in Houston that she and her family are safely in Austin.

She said the 2 1/2 hour trip took 10 hours.

I’m really happy to know that she’s out and safe, and I hope that her home survives the storm.

Write Once, Write Twice

I’ve to two papers due the first week of October. Which is, disturbingly enough, rapidly approaching.

I’d reached the minimum number of pages for the second paper, when I realized that it was absolute dreck.

So I started over again from scratch, and got three pages done.

And I’m still not happy with what I’ve got.

Google, Satellites, and Archeology

Computer programmer Luca Mori found the remains of an ancient Roman villa when he browsed Google Earth maps showing satellite images of his local area.

Apparently Google Earth is even cooler than we thought.

ADDENDUM the First:
In retrospect, I should have titled this “The Google Satellites”

Here’s a Good Use of Our Tax Dollars

The FBI is joining the Bush administration’s War on P*rn. And it’s looking for a few good agents.

Early last month, the bureau’s Washington Field Office began recruiting for a new anti-obscenity squad. Attached to the job posting was a July 29 Electronic Communication from FBI headquarters to all 56 field offices, describing the initiative as “one of the top priorities” of Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales and, by extension, of “the Director.” That would be FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III.

The new squad will divert eight agents, a supervisor and assorted support staff to gather evidence against “manufacturers and purveyors” of p*rn*graphy — not the kind exploiting children, but the kind that depicts, and is marketed to, consenting adults.

I’m actually at a loss for words here.
