Elizabeth Street: A Novel Based on True Events (2006/2010) Laurie Fabiano
Laurie Fabiano’s grandmother and great-grandmother were amazing, remarkable women. This is a retelling of her great-grandmother Giovanna’s life, with pieces of the author’s interactions with her grandmother (Giovanna’s daughter) added in, and details, where they would have been unknown so many years later (such as what individuals thought or said) fictionalized.
Regardless, Giovanna Costa Pontillo Siena was an amazing woman.
I picked this up because it was only a couple bucks and I thought it would be interesting to read about the history of Italian immigrants in New York.
This turned out to be a story I had trouble putting down, and which stayed with me after I’d put it down.
To be honest, I’d rather not give you any more details, because the story was a delight to read, and the shocks all the more surprising because they were real and true.
If you have a kindle, you’ll be well served if you pick up Elizabeth Street, and spend some time with Giovanna.
