Yo, Bro

I’ve joked for years that most guys I know treat me like the little sister they never wanted.

Now I have further proof.

Over a year ago, I came home to discover a surprise package. Why yes, I did in fact receive six bottles of bird vomit. How lucky am I?

So yesterday, I received yet another package in the mail. Now, before I show you what I receive, you should know that two of my friends also received packages.

Anne is very excited about her package of ramen, and MWT was thrilled to have received a box of sachima.

So what did Michelle receive, may you ask?

Was I this excited about my loot?

Christmas Carols

New poll in the sidebar: what’s your favorite Christmas Carol.

This doesn’t include hymns, which you might sing while caroling. Of course, the last time I remember caroling, was for French club in high school. We went around my French teachers neighborhood, singing French Christmas carols, to her neighbors. Then we went back to her house and had a party.

Anyway, your favorite Christmas carols?

Sugar Cookies Coming Up!

Saturday I cut out sugar cookies and baked them. They still need iced, but that’s for another day.

My Feet Hurt

Spent the weekend making Christmas cookies (most of which are frozen/refrigerated in dough form).

Any requests before I finish up next weekend?

Christmas Songs

New poll today – best Christmas song. This does not include hymns or carols, but rather the songs you hear on the radio.

But I’ll take comments for hymns and carols.

Holiday Baking: Bourbon Balls

Michael made bourbon balls this weekend (I helped). The thing about bourbon balls is you need to make them ahead of time and let them sit. We usually make them around Thanksgiving, but that didn’t work out this year.

Bourbon Balls
1 box Vanilla wafers
1 cup confectioners sugar
1 cup chopped nuts
3 tbsp corn syrup
1/2 cup bourbon
3 tbsp cocoa
1 tbsp espresso powder
Confectioners powder and/or cocoa powder

Michael & Nilla Wafer Box

Crush the vanilla wafers.

Crush the Nilla wafers! CRUSH! CRUSH! CRUSH!

Dump all the ingredients together in a mixing bowl. Mix until you have a dark brown gooey mass.

Bourbon Balls

Allow mixture to stand for several minutes. This is a good time to make the second batch of “dough”.

Form dough into small balls. Roll balls in powdered sugar. Place bourbon balls into waxed paper lined tin, placing a layer of waxed paper between each layer.

Place tins aside for several weeks.

Bourbon Balls

In theory, you can use stale/toasted cake instead of vanilla wafers, but I never have stale cake on hand.

I’m serious about setting them aside for several weeks. They’ll be much much better if you wait.

It IS Black Friday

New poll over on the sidebar: Worst Christmas Song Ever.

These are the songs that make me want to smash the radio and throttle the singer.

You get to choose from my least favorites. If you want, you can add your hated songs here in the comments, and I’ll make another poll later.

Caveat 1: We’re talking songs, not a specific version by a particular artist.
Caveat 2: This is something you’re likely to hear when you leave the house and go Christmas shopping. Not something that was played once and then disappeared.

Counting down to Thanksgiving

I love Thanksgiving week in Morgantown.

Students are gone the entire week. Since WVU faculty and staff have to work other holidays (like Veterans Day) because of the class schedule we get Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off this week. Which means that a lot of people take the entire week off, which means that things at work are incredibly slow. So I have a two day work week, and those two days are gong to be slow, so it’s a good time to get caught up. (There will be a lot of cleaning these two days.)

Even better, traffic is almost non-existent, since almost all the students are gone, as are some faculty and staff members. You can get across town with no difficulty, so this is a good week to take care of all those errands you’be been putting off since school was back in session.

And of course, there’s Thanksgiving itself. I love Thanksgiving. No gift giving, and it’s all about food. We pick up our fresh turkey Tuesday evening–they’ll be at the Spruce Street parking lot Tuesday evening from 6 to 7. I’be never had turkey this fresh to the best of my knowledge, so I’m very excited.

And of course I get to make pies. I’m planning on pumpkin and sweet potato, but I may make an apple next weekend since it is Grandmom’s favorite.

Only bad thing is this is also the beginning of the pre-Christmas insanity. Of course, that make me even more thankful, since most of my shopping is done already

Veterans Day

Poppies91 years ago today The Great War, the War to End All Wars, official ended.

Twenty one years later, the second World War started, and horrors even greater were seen and experienced by soldiers and civilians alike.

On May 26, 1954, President Eisenhower officially changed Armistice Day–a day to honor those who fought in WWI–to Veterans Day, to honor all veterans.

Five years later, the Vietnam War would begin, and the American view of military service would change profoundly.

Of all the war memorials in the US (not including Arlington Memorial Cemetery) I believe that the Vietnam War Memorial is the most profoundly affecting.

The men and women who served during Vietnam were, for the most part, not the brave volunteers of the Greatest Generation, going off to defend our country from an unprovoked attack. Instead, many were drafted, often against their will, and sent to fight a war that was not supported by the American people.

Those who returned home were treated shamefully. Although I was only five when the war ended, I do not remember a time when I was unaware of this embarrassment (lest you think me a prodigal, wise beyond my years, my mother comes from a military family, and her father, who joined to fight in WWII, retired towards the end of the Vietnam War.)

It is because the war was so controversial, and because so many veterans were treated shamefully upon their return home, that I find The Wall so affecting.

It is if, as a country, we suddenly woke up to the wrongness of our actions. To me, the Wall, and the listing of the names of those who died, is in part an apology to each soldier listed there, it makes them individuals remembered for their service that was so unappreciated at the time.

Of course for the current wars, we have digital memorials that are updated daily, remembering those who have died with more than just names. And these memorials are deeply affecting. But nothing compares to standing at the wall and seeing name after name listed. The sheer magnitude of the loss is almost overwhelming.

So on Veterans’ Day, we should remember the individuals who have served, but in remembering the individual losses, we should not lose sight of the vast number who have given their lives in their service. We should remember not just those individuals who served and the sacrifices they made, but also the loss to the country of so many of our sons and daughters.

American Military Service from the Civil War to the First Gulf War
U.S. Military Service During War 41,891,368
Battle Deaths 651,030
Other Deaths (In Theater) 308,800
Other Deaths in Service (Non-Theater) 230,279
Non-mortal Woundings 1,431,290

To those who serve, past and present, thank you for your sacrifices so that we may remain free.
