All Accounts Settled (2025) Drew Hayes (Fred the Vampire Accountant #9)
The final Fred the Vampire Accountant book.
I believe I read the author had health issues that kept him from finishing the book on the schedule he set for himself, and I also think he was fighting with the publisher of his earlier books, which may also have been distracting.
Opening with caveats probably gives you an idea of how I feel about this book. It’s the final book in the series, so I wanted it to be strong and perfect, but…. it wasn’t.
I could see/feel some of the struggles he had in writing, which is understandable. I wish he’d taken a little more time with the editing, both to tighten up some of the sections of the book, and find all the copy-editing issues.
Of which there were multiple.
That out of the way, as far as the story, I was happy with how things went. We got to see Fred’s full story arc, and how he had changed and grown over the course of the series. I also liked the vampire mythos they came up with here, and why Fred’s power was what it was.
Those explanations fit well with how Fred has acted throughout the series, and how he has worked to collect allies and friends rather than amass power.
Being the final book in the series, we got multiple glimpses into the lives of the members of Fred’s clan–and his friends. I’m not certain I quite got the bits about Sally–those seemed new to the story line, and I wasn’t quite sure how that would change Gideon’s relationship to Sally.
But it was satisfying.
