Network Effect (2020) Martha Wells (The Murderbot Diaries #5)

“What is that thing?” Target Leader demanded. “What are you? You’re a bot?”
Thiago said, “It’s a security unit. A bot/human construct.”
Target Leader didn’t seem to believe him. “Why does it look like a person?”
I said, “I ask myself that sometimes.”
Over the comm loudspeaker, Dr. Ratthi said, “It is a person!”
In the background, I heard Overse whisper, “Ratthi, get off the comm!”
I had a plan, but it was mostly “keep the hostiles off the ship,” which is not so much a plan as a statement of hopeful intent.
(The lesson was: if you’re going to fuck with something bigger and meaner than you, use a quick targeted attack and then run away really fast. (This is the way I always try to operate, too.) GrayCris’ attack had not been quick and targeted and they had failed to run away effectively.)
