Vivian discovered magic existed when her daughter was attacked and changed into a werewolf.

Now they’ve moved to Veilport and Aria has a scholarship to The Grimoire Grammar School and Vivian is even more overwhelmed.

She wasn’t weeping. That was appropriate. It meant the medicine and the therapy were working.

They’re working animals, like guide dogs. And we don’t distract working animals, remember?”

Fortunately, Aria had spent two whole weeks obsessed with guide dogs (including trying to convince Vivian to make her a vest to wear so she could be a dog in public and still count as being dressed).

What is marvelous about this story? First, it is very pro therapy.

“I mean, I’ve got everything, right?”

“Do you?” Dr. Kumar gave her a look, the one that said that the psychiatrist had noticed the pause and realized it meant there had been a lot of answers discarded before Vivian had said something out loud.

And diverse characters, including a stay-at-home dad who writes romances books.

“I’m a combat mage,” he said, looking away and fidgeting with the hem of his shirt. “I’ve done some… stuff. And I might have to again some day.”

“Oh.” She wasn’t even sure what to picture there, but she was willing to bet his nightmares looked a lot like hers. Maybe worse. “So right now you like happy endings.”

“Exactly.”

And things you wouldn’t think about when dealing with a kid with unexpected needs.

“OK, into the tub. No, back to human form, we only have enough shampoo for your human hair. And remember, we use towels, not shaking off, inside.”

And the emails from the school.

It was delightful while also making me tear up several times as Vivian tries to navigate her new world and the mean moms and her own background.
