Uncle Flower’s Homecoming Waltz (2012) Marissa K. Lingen
This is the first of a spate of short stories I read.
Because I like short stories.
Zal is a century dreamer–she dreams far into the future, a skill that is quite rare, and one to which she is adjusting, as it only recently came upon her.
Her beloved uncle flower has been away at war for a third of her life, but now he is returning home, and she cannot wait for him to see how much she’s grown in the intervening years. The letters–censored as they were–were not enough to truly tell her what life was like.
It took awhile for me to figure out what was going on, which made me slow to get into the story, but I quite enjoyed it once I started to understand the world in which Zal lived.
This is a short story, and just a slice of Zal’s life.
