An Elderly Lady Is Up to No Good (2018) Helene Tursten translated by Marlaine Delargy

“An Elderly Lady Is Faced with a Difficult Dilemma” (2018)

Maud is 88 years old, and has lived for free in her apartment since her father died when she was a teenager.

Seventy years had passed since the contract had been drawn up, and at the time no one could have envisaged that one of the daughters would still be living there.

Maud also has problems.

Problems she discovers can easily be solved with just a little blunt force trauma.

Yes indeed, this is a story collection about a serial killer who is also a little old lady.

(S)he had learned that it was smart not to reveal that all her senses were in full working order; instead, she allowed people to act in accordance with their own preconceptions.

This collection is only of five stories. The first three stories stand on their own, the last two stories are tied together and deal with the same murder.

These stories are unlike anything else I’d read previously and although it is disconcerting to find myself sympathetic with a serial killer–I kinda was, at least occasionally.
