The Heiress Effect (2013) Courtney Milan (Brothers Sinister #2)
Set in Cambridgeshire, England, 1867
She asked Whitting about his studies, and when he made a wry comment about preferring to concentrate his efforts on the study of liquids, she stared at him. “How surprising.” Her eyes were very round. “I had not thought you to have the capacity of intellect to read physics!”
Whitting stared at her. “Did you—” The man seemed to grasp hold of his amazement with a visible struggle.
“He’s demonstrated that he can cause a convulsion in me with his current. I told him that it wasn’t the same kind of fit that I have. It doesn’t feel the same at all. But it is, after all, only my body. What do I know?”
“So she’s going to have all the babies. And I shall spoil them and be the exciting, wicked aunt. I shall give them sweets until they’re all riled up, and then hand them back to the nurse and be on my way.”
For some reason, Emily wasn’t looking her in the eye, and Jane had a sudden suspicion. “Emily,” she said softly, “do these people who don’t eat meat or drink liquor have names, by any chance?”
“Are you trying to be a ninnyhammer?”
“A ninnyhammer,” Jane said, “sounds like a magic hammer. One that I can use to smite ninnies. I have a great need for one of those.”
