Lady Helena Investigates, Audio Book

Lady Helena Investigates, Audio Book (2018) Jane Steen narrated by Elizabeth Klett (Scott-De Quincy Mysteries #1)

1881, Sussex

A recurring theme of my childhood memories was drawing or reading quietly while Michael embarked on his fifth or sixth tantrum of the day. And yet I, a year and a half older than Michael, was always called Baby.

“they’re easier to see than the way writing usually looks. The letters don’t move around.”

“Letters move around?” I looked curiously at my brother.

“They do for me. They wiggle and slip away when I try to look at them. But this writing is in a picture, so the picture holds it steady for me.”

To my surprise, I encountered the direct glare of his very beautiful blue eyes. It was almost unheard-of for Michael to look anyone directly in the eye, with the exception of his children.

That’s why deepest mourning should be carried out with the mirrors covered, you know. You’re not supposed to be looking at yourself and considering who you are.

My husband’s grave was still only distinguished by a temporary marker. The ground had settled almost to the point where the large monument I’d ordered could be installed, but the stonemason was a cautious man and preferred to wait another month.
