The Fierce Reads Anthology: A Tor.Com Original (2012) stories by Jennifer Bosworth, Marissa Meyer, Anna Banks, Emmy Laybourne, Leigh Bardugo

Fierce ReadsThis is an anthology of five YA stories by five YA authors with books out right now.

Which means it’s free.

The first story is Anna Banks’ “Legacy Lost.” Grom of Syrena and Nalia of Poseidon have been promised in marriage since Nalia was born. The promise was to bring peace to their two kingdoms, but neither Grom or Nalia wants anything to do with the marriage. But their parents insist, so both are looking for ways out, not expecting that theirs might actually be a love match.

This is a YA story, not a romance. You have been warned.

“The Witch of Duva” by Leigh Bardugo seemed to start out like any number of folk / fairy tales: the mother dies, an unwanted step-mother comes, the step mother attempts to drive the daughter into the woods where she meets the witch.

Except, that’s not what it is. It look me a bit to get into the story, but once I did I really liked it.

“Prophet” by Jennifer Bosworth was a very short story that seemed more like an introduction than a complete story.

Emmy Laybourne’s story “Dress Your Marines in Whine” was the most depressing of the five stories–and all of these stories were very dark and depressing. A researcher is trying to write up the report of a human studies research project, but has trouble doing so, because it keeps him from forgetting what happened.

“Glitches” by Marissa Meyer is a short story about Cinder, the character of her book Cinder. It’s stand alone, but introduces the character and the world. I can’t decide if I want to read the story or not.

As this is a free collection, I highly recommend checking it out.
