In 1994, 86 acres of land were purchased to establish the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, the 500th refuge created after a legal battle with Allegheny Power Systems over construction of a hydroelectric facility that would have flooded about a quarter of the valley. History of Canaan Valley.
