Hide and Seek (2022) Josh Lanyon
Andy was already headed home–to the small Maine town where his great uncle has his small antique store, but when he arrives, things are made even worse: his uncle was in the hospital after being badly beaten during a break in.
It makes Andy’s reasons for running home seem smaller.
He must have finally got a good look at Andy’s face because he made a choking sound and said thickly, “What’s the other guy look like?”
Short answer? An asshole.
“I walked into a door.”
“If that’s the case, I hope you kept walking.”
Andy smiled because smiling was his default.
To pour salt into his wounds, he learns his childhood crush has returned to town–the crush he thought was dead.
So Andy has to discover who broke into his uncle’s home/store and almost killed him, make sure his own ex doesn’t find him to try and finish that job, and decide if he can trust Quinn.
I’d set aside this story to read when I didn’t know what I was in the mood for–it worked perfectly and was just what I needed to get out of my own head.
