It’s just a weakness he has, and he only gives in to it every so often. He’s a good man.”

“It’s not ridiculous for you.” Michael stopped at the door, turning to face me. “For you, it’s always the people who matter. The . . . the . . . emotions.” He twitched. “I’ve observed some people are like that, men as well as women. They don’t analyze the way sensible people do.”

“Yes, Michael, dear.” For once, I did not feel annoyed with my brother.
