Lady Ambition’s Dilemma, Audiobook (2022) Jane Steen and Elizabeth Klett narrator (Scott-De Quincy Mysteries #3)
Set in Sussex in 1883
“In any case, we’re not discussing me. Are you trying to tell me Dederick . . .” I searched for the right words, “prefers the company of other men?”
“A little in love with him after a while, in a silly, romantic sort of way. There were quite a few boys involved in what you might call romances, you know.”
“Good heavens.” No wonder so few men talked about their schooldays.
“I know all about it, in case you’re wondering.” Guttridge had brought in my coat and hat; depositing the latter article on the sofa, she moved behind me to help me with the coat. “He’s not—well, not very that way inclined. It’s just a weakness he has, and he only gives in to it every so often. He’s a good man.”
…
“Keeping company with me helps to stop gossip about him, and I like being with him. He’s clever and kind and a good friend, and I’m resolved not to marry, so clever and kind does me just fine.”
“It’s not ridiculous for you.” Michael stopped at the door, turning to face me. “For you, it’s always the people who matter. The . . . the . . . emotions.” He twitched. “I’ve observed some people are like that, men as well as women. They don’t analyze the way sensible people do.”
“Yes, Michael, dear.” For once, I did not feel annoyed with my brother.
