The Lawrence Browne Affair (2017) Cat Sebastian (The Turner Series #2)

The Lawrence Browne AffairSet in Cornwall, England in 1816

“Five servants quit,” Halliday said, tapping Lawrence’s desk in emphasis. Dust puffed up in tiny clouds around the vicar’s fingertips. “Five. And you were woefully understaffed even before then.”

Five fewer servants? So that was why the house had been so pleasantly quiet, why his work had been so blissfully undisturbed.

Lawrence felt his chest tighten, his lungs constrict, as if he were being buried alive. He needed to be alone, to be in control, to do whatever he needed to make these sensations stop.

It was satisfying, too, to create order out of utter chaos. It was like untangling a thread or picking a lock.

“I wonder what will happen when you realize you aren’t mad. So much of your life hangs from that one supposition. It’s like the story you were telling me about that Italian fellow who thought electricity was inside the dead frog—a lot of his science was rubbish because of that one error. What will you do with yourself when you grasp that your mind is only different, not deranged?”
