Murder at Midnight (2023) Katharine Schellman (Lily Adler Mystery, #4)
Peter, in spite of having six elder sisters, had long been accustomed to managing the finances of his whole family as his sisters married and moved away one by one. But Lily couldn’t help resenting the implication that, three years after her husband’s death, she might have been content to remain ignorant.
“There’s a door past the kitchen, between the servants’ quarters and the rest of the house. Anytime we have guests, I keep it locked at night.”
“Do you worry about theft?”
Mrs. Reynaud met his eyes. “I worry about the gentleman guests bothering the female staff.”
Mrs. Adler sighed. “Leaving the details of a scandal to your neighbors’ imaginations will always produce far more interesting gossip than spelling out what actually happened.”
Sometimes life is nothing but mistakes and learning from them.
