“And I don’t know what you mean by saying a secret isn’t safe with me. I’m as silent as the grave, as the saying goes. Why, just last week Miss Ainsley told me the reason I haven’t seen her father about is that he’s been tossed in prison for unpaid debts, and I haven’t told a soul about it, so there you are!”

Fanny hesitated, then added in a serious whisper, “My Aunt Judith would not approve of my saying saliva.”

“Well, I promise not to tell,” Lily replied, not knowing what else to say.
