Keith had investigated orgy sites where there had been twenty or more witnesses all standing and watching some victim being dismembered just because a cameraman was filming it. The presence of a camera implied fiction and a sense that some authority was in control.

“Are you doing something dangerous?”

Keith considered this. Was this a dangerous action? Surveying his immediate surroundings of bland modern concrete buildings, a large flagpole rising from a circle of green lawn and the vast expanse of parking lots, he saw no imminent threat so answered: “No, why would u think that?”

“B/c you’re you? And you want to talk to Jerry, which… you never do”

“I love you babe,” Keith texted back.

“OMG you are doing something dangerous”

I’d say when you’re a person who gets in trouble a lot you know your only defense is honesty. Otherwise you get blamed for everything instead of just the stuff you really did.

“That means you have an excuse to call your secret phone girlfriend. I’m so jealous.”

“Come on, she’s not my phone girlfriend.” Keith felt his cheeks warming. “I’ve never even seen Susan. For all I know she’s a pile of old telephones brought to life by a corporate wizard.”
