It Takes Two to Tumble (2017) Cat Sebastian (Seducing the Sedgwicks #1)
Every day he visited the poor and the housebound, trying to find small ways to improve their lot or at least their outlook. That was why he had gone into the church.
When people needed help, they went to a clergyman. And he wanted to be that person who people turned to for help. Somebody had to fill in the gaps—make sure the elderly had company, the sick solace, the poor food.
“I have no more use for letters than Jamie does. I can only read a little and writing is quite impossible. I gather it’s a family failing.”
“He’s nearly eighty,” he said, as if that made death more palatable. And it did, in a way; people several degrees away from death tended to find comfort in the idea that the departed had lived out his full allotment of time on earth. The nearest mourners never did. There was only scant comfort for them, and Ben knew it too well.
