American Gods (2001) Neil Gaiman

Sometimes, you just need to read something that you’ve read before and loved. After reading a bunch of new fantasy it was time to re-read Neil Gaiman’s American Gods.

In some ways, American Gods is the perfect novel for me; It combines mythology and folklore, two of my favorite subjects. And it’s written by Neil Gaiman, who definitely qualifies as one of my favorite writers.

The Old Gods–the Norse, the Irish, the African–are clinging to the edges of life, surviving and finding worship however they can. Shadow, just released from prison, is hired by Mr. Wednesday to meddle in the affairs of these Gods. That’s the gist of the story, but it doesn’t really tell you anything about Shadow or Mr. Wednesday or the tale itself, for it is impossible to sum up in a few words, characters that take an entire novel to get to know.

What should I believe? thought Shadow, and the voice came back to him from somewhere deep beneath the world, in a bass rumble: Believe everything.
