PAD: Burning Bushes
I love the color of these bushes, but I’m having a lousy time getting a picture that shows that. (Here was yesterday’s attempt.) I fear, however, this is the best I’m going to get this year of these particular bushes–calling for rain the next two days, then the weekend, by the time Monday comes around, they most likely won’t look nearly as good.
But that’s okay, because I’ve been enjoying looking at them all week.

Caveat Emptor
Just heard an interview with John Raese, Republican candidate to replace Byrd in the US Senate.
In an almost astounding case of, “Fuck you, I’ve got mine!” Rease said he wants to get rid of the minimum wage. “Asked if the federally mandated minimum wage should be abolished, Raese answered, ‘absolutely.'”
A couple of notes here, the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. If an employee worked 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year (which never happens mind you) they would have an income of $15,080.00 a year. The median income in WV in 2008 was $37,528. For the US as a whole it was $52,029, and in that same year, 17% of West Virginians had income below the poverty level.
Raese believes that West Virginians should be at the mercy of their employers in determine what is a “living wage” (Let me tell you, the minimum wage ain’t it)
He also doesn’t like regulation of industry, so not only does he believe that businesses can pay you as little as they want, he also seems to believe that industry can do whatever they want to the environment, their employees, their customers–that they answer only to their investors.
Yeah, we saw how well that‘s worked out.
And Raese’s record on safety speaks for itself as does his record on government spending.

Why I Love Bill Stewart
Radio is playing post-game interview, announcer asked about penalties, to which Coach Stewart replied, ‘For as long as I am coach, I will never, I will NEVER allow my boys to play dirty football.’
Thank you Coach Stewart.

Around Campus
The weather has finally turned cool, and although we still desperately need rain, all we got were cloudy skies.
Decided to wander around the main campus today with my camera. Probably should have gone earlier in the morning when there were fewer people, but I picked a few buildings I liked and shot pictures, ignoring the students wandering by.

Sunday Flower Pr0n
Wandered around the downtown campus this afternoon (pictures of that tomorrow). The light was terrible, but I enjoyed the walk anyway.

Arboretum
Went to the Arboretum today. Didn’t go very far on the trails, as my ankle is not up to those kinds of hills yet, but it was a beautiful day, and nice to be walking around outside.

Moving Forward
This weekend we spent visiting my grandmother. We also had a family meeting regarding her care, and since it didn’t come up during, after the meeting I sat down and talked with my grandmother.
I told her that it was just not possible for her to come back to Morgantown to live, because I simply cannot provide her with the level of care she deserves.
For the past several months we’ve all been in a sort of limbo: she has been with my aunt while she recovers but it wasn’t clear if she would–or even could–come back to live with us in Morgantown. Physically, she has been incapable of returning here, not just because of the long car drive, but because she is currently using a wheelchair part of the time, which will never fit through the doorways in my house. And as much as she loves my house and how cozy it is, the bathroom is not handicapped accessible and has always been a problem for her.
The talk was very hard for me–I was afraid she would think that I didn’t want her to live with me anymore, but she did understand that she needs a greater level of care than she did before I broke my ankle and she broke her leg, and unfortunately, Michael and I are incapable of giving her the support and care she is receiving at my aunt’s house.
I didn’t want to have that discussion, but it was necessary and important for both her well-being and mine, and it was unfair to everyone to leave the situation unsettled and unclear.
Although I feel a sense of grief that she will not longer be living with us, and I will no longer get to see her every day, and to laugh at her when she lectured Kit, I will be seeing her on a regular basis (once or twice a month) and who knows, we might even take Kit with us during our next visit.
