The Dark Tide (2011) Josh Lanyon

The Dark TideAt the end of the last book, Adrien was shot and died briefly, but now with a valve replacement, he is supposedly on the mend. But he still isn’t sure where he stands with Jake, who outed himself to put the the man who shot Adrien behind bars.

Although what Adrien needs is calm and quiet to recover from his surgery, what he gets is another mystery.

I reacted instinctively, grabbing the rush-bottomed chair in the hall and throwing it with all my strength. “Get the fuck out of here,” I yelled over the racket of the chair clattering into the door and hitting the floor.

And — surprisingly — the intruder did get the fuck out.

Adrien has a surprisingly difficult time with his recovery, not just the physical recover (although they do an excellent job with this in the story, as well see Adrien struggling not just physically with his exhaustion, but also emotionally with these changes in his life.

Everything was under control now, and according to my cardiologist, I was making terrific progress. The ironic thing about the surgery and the news that I was evidently going to make old bones after all was that I felt mortal in a way that I hadn’t for the last fifteen years.

Although Adrien physically has a lot going on, things are just as difficult for Jake as he has to unwind his marriage and find a new career. And figure out if there is a relationship left with Adrien.

One of the things I liked was seeing Adrien work things out with both Guy and Mel.

One thing I’d learned the hard way: people loved you in the way they knew how — and often it was not the way you knew. Or needed.

Although the doctor ordered therapist probably helped with that as well.

I liked this story, and Jake continues to grow on me, as he finally comes to accept himself.
