Body at Buccaneer’s Bay (2021) Josh Lanyon (Secrets and Scrabble)

Body at Buccaneers BayThis was delayed, and delayed, and delayed.

However, a brief check of her website made it clear that she (like the rest of us) was struggling with the pandemic, and would be unable to meet her publishing schedule.

Which, good for her for realizing that, and changing her schedule rather than pushing and giving us a lousy book and/or harming her well-being.

Ellery and Jack are still working out what kind of relationship they are having. And the fact Ellery keeps getting involved (no matter how accidentally) with murders is a problem for Jack, who lost his wife and their unborn child years prior, and so is afraid of losing those he loves.

Talia’s brows arched. She looked from Jack to Ellery. “Then you are seeing each other?”

“No, no,” Ellery said. “It’s a custom on the island for the police chief to greet citizens with a kiss.”

This is a cozy, which means the story is lighter in tone, and in this case pokes gentle fun at itself.

“Uh, you live in Pirate’s Cove, right? That quaint New England village with a homicide rate second only to Cabot’s Cove?”

A quick and fun read, which is just what my brain wanted. (Which is why I read it two days after it came out.)
