Snuff (2011) Terry Pratchett (Discworld)
This is the last Sam Vimes book. I’d put off reading it for years, but now I’ve read it, and I’m almost done with Discworld.
Vimes has been ordered to take a vacation, but (to the surprise of no one) he managed to find crime while at Sybil’s ancestral home.
She had a special smile for these occasions; it was warm and friendly and carved out of rock. You had to stop discussing politics or you would run right into it, causing no damage to anything but yourself.
Ah Vimes, he never changed.
(H)e’d reasoned that a knuckleduster was not so much a weapon as a way of making certain that he stayed alive. It could be called a defensive instrument, a kind of shield, as it were, especially if you needed to get your defense in before you were attacked.
It was a dangerous habit: once policemen stopped being civilians the only other thing they could be was soldiers.
