The Lawrence Browne Affair (2017) Cat Sebastian (The Turner Series)

The Lawrence Browne AffairSet in England in 1816.

Apparently I’m just picking books I want to read and ignoring the rest of any series they might be in.

Georgie had taken matters into his own hands, and now Georgie was persona non grata in London, and probably everywhere else that wasn’t the bottom of the Thames.

Penkellis was no place for a child, madmen were not fit guardians, and nobody knew those facts better than Lawrence himself, who had been raised under precisely those conditions.

Lawrence felt the too-familiar sense of rising panic, that even in this room he was not safe from the chaos of the outside world.

Lawrence felt his chest tighten, his lungs constrict, as if he were being buried alive. He needed to be alone, to be in control, to do whatever he needed to make these sensations stop.

Lawrence had learned years ago that when he felt the creeping unease that signaled what he had come to think of as an attack of madness, he could sometimes set his mind to rights by exhausting himself. It was probably only a temporary reprieve, only delaying the inevitable moment he went as fully and irretrievably mad as his father and brother. But temporary relief was better than no relief, so in the summer he swam in the sea, and in the colder weather he chopped enough wood to warm a house far grander than Penkellis.

“Do loud noises bring on these episodes? Or is it something else?”

Lawrence shook his head. Noise was only the beginning. “I need things to be predictable,”
