Here were rust reds and bright yellows, and sick-looking greens. These, she realized, were stalactites of industry, chemicals from human work that had managed to seep deep underground.
This place had been where they’d once kept the national stock of the birch and the cat-o’-nine-tails, as though there might be a shortage.
