Death at the Manor, Audiobook (2022) Katharine Schellman narrated by Henrietta Meire (Lily Adler Mystery #3)
Set in Portsmouth, England 1816
“Begging your pardons,” Mr. Mears said, speaking up when it became clear that Miss Wright was too occupied with wiping her eyes and catching her breath to say anymore. “She means Isaiah, who you saw. Mrs. Wright always called manservants George, as she found it easier than trying to remember different names.
“Of course he had nothing to do with it!” Miss Wright said, sitting up abruptly. “He will tell them so, and they will have to take him at his word, will they not? He is a gentleman, after all.”
She was grateful for her aunt’s trust, and glad to no longer be in the dark, even if she wasn’t sure what she was supposed to do next. Continue on as they had before, as though nothing had changed—but could she do that?
She could, she decided. She owed that to her aunt and Susan both, who had supported her through some of the worst times in her life. They had offered her nothing but love and understanding, providing everything from a respite from her father’s moods to a home for the terrible embroidery from her school days. And she loved them in return. She would behave toward them as she had always done.
