Hither, Page (2019) Cat Sebastian (Page & Sommers #1)

Hither, PageSet in England in 1946

What I love best about this book is she makes the time period (and much everything else) exactly like it does in the Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple series. Only with some boinking.

You can’t hold it against him. He had a bad war.

“Agnes also has it on good authority that Colonel Armstrong pays this secretary only half what some other fellow pays his own secretary.”

“Dare I ask where Wendy got the sugar?” Sommers eyed his half-eaten scone with a sort of guilty hunger. “Last I heard, she used all her coupons on peppermint creams for the children at the vicarage.”

I’ve missed an evil element right on my doorstep. Either my powers of observation are lamentably poor, or this evil element is so ingrained into the fabric of our lives here that it’s become invisible to me. And, James, I don’t know which is worse.”

(E)veryone seemed younger when they weren’t in the middle of a war. He supposed it was regular sleep and not being shot at that worked the magic, which meant he wasn’t about to find out firsthand any time soon.

By the next station, Leo was left with a lapful of shiny foil paper, gimcrack toys, and zero intact crackers. He had unraveled his mystery and was left with nothing but trash.
