Caliban nodded slowly. “They have paid most of the costs already, have they not? And the people who have learned to profit from the war will wish to continue.”

“We are not selling anyone’s boots,” said Caliban. “We are informing the guards—”

“Oh, the hell we are,” said Slate. “Have you forgotten what we’re doing here?”

There was a brief pause. “…yes,” said Caliban. “I had, actually. All right.”
